Ahhh! I used to think it'd be so weird to call 911. Since I've had kids I've had to call twice. Both for the same reason… Some of y'all (friends and family, especially) may remember one of my earliest blog posts, when Knox was about 10 months old and I locked him in the car in the parking lot of his school. While going to tour it for the very first time. (Hi Marla, I'm Jessica. Knox's mom… Would love to chat but can I borrow your phone to call 911 real quick?)
Anyway, we got to experience Round 2 this evening. This time Kroger was lucky enough to witness the excitement. Oh, and it wasn't MY fault! I loaded the kids in the Tahoe, then the groceries and my purse (with the keys) in the passenger side, shut the door and as I was walking around to the other side I heard the doors lock. (?!?!?!) I have no idea what happened because it's not supposed to lock while the keys are in the car, out of the ignition. Much less auto lock. (We may need to call the dealership on that one.)
Anyway, since this was Round 2 I didn't freak out as much. Although it was pretty hot today; at 7 it was still 98-99 degrees. So I flagged down a poor guy in the parking lot to see if I could borrow his phone. I tried to call James (who was in Houston) first because he could unlock it from the OnStar App on his phone. No answer, so I resorted to 911…
Ahhh, there's nothing more humbling than an entire parking lot of people turning to see why the sirens are blaring and a firetruck and ambulance are pulling in, only to have to raise your hand and wave them over.
The firemen were as sweet as ever but with the way 2 of them looked at me I'm fairly certain they remembered me. (#thatmom) …Knox was SO excited. I mean really, he was excited the first time but this time I could hear him…
"MAMA, DO YOU SEE THAT FIRETRUCK?!?!?! DO YOU SEE IT?!?!"
Why yes, Knox. Yes I do…
They used the inflatable thingy to pry the door open but were still having a little trouble getting to the lock. They were preparing to break through the back window when in a last-ditch effort I asked to borrow one of their phones and THANK GOD I was able to get a hold of James. I convinced them to wait just one minute, and sure enough the Bluetooth signal came through and we heard the doors click. Praise sweet heavens above for technology. James would not have been thrilled to come home to our 2 month old vehicle with shattered windows…
The whole shebang probably lasted 15 minutes, and you want to know the scary thing? Even with it being 7pm and "only" 98 degrees, the kids were already pretty sweaty and flushed once I got to them. They were still happy. But hot! Just shows you how fast it can happen, and that yes - it really is a 911-worthy emergency.
After it was all said and done I was a little disappointed I'd left my phone at home and wasn't able to capture any of the chaos. Or at least a pic of Knox with the firemen. But it did hit me once we got home…
Knox was wearing the perfect shirt for the occasion. Hahaha!
So ladies. Moral of the story… Never walk out of the house looking like I did today because you just may need to be rescued by a dozen cute firemen ;)
(But not as cute as my husband… Obviously.)

WOW how scary!!! My car does the auto lock thing and I HATE it! I have never been locked out thank God! Glad the kiddos were ok!
You poor thing! I'm so glad your hubby was able to unlock it. I locked our 4 month old in the house by herself a few weeks ago. It was a nightmare but luckily she was fine!
I have a tahoe as well, and my doors will lock with keys in it. I've done it, with my kid in the car. :-/ THe crazy thing is, I have OnStar, and for the first 5 min of freaking out, it didn't dawn on me to call them. Thank goodness they can remote unlock the doors. Y'all should have gotten OnStar free for a year when you bought your tahoe, did you not?
This post was so funny/not so funny. ;) You are such a great mom and I love the way you recap your adventures.
In all seriousness, I'm so glad you guys are all okay. :)
Been there!
Love the last part ;)
omlawd! was your face as bright as a fire engine...I would be making jokes as everyone was staring at me "yep mother of the year award goes to me, locked my kids in the car"
or "they thought Toyota was bad...how about my ghost locking tahoe" I just get so "jokey" when there's an emergency...people would have thought gosh is she the mom or some really bad stand up comic...
props to you for keeping your cool and it was 60 here today so I can't imagine being 99! wow scary.
You should be able to call on-star (1-800-on-star I think) and they'll open your doors remotely. I've had to use it once and it worked perfectly
